Federal regulations set the maximum work hours and minimum requirements for rest between flights for most pilots. Airline pilots fly an average of 75 hours per month and work an additional 150 hours per month performing other duties, such as checking weather conditions and preparing flight plans. Pilots have variable work schedules that may include some days of work followed by some days off. Seniority enables pilots who have worked at a company for a long time to get preferred routes and schedules.

Regulatory agencies also limit how many hours a pilot can fly each week or month. For example, the FAA limits commercial pilots to a typical schedule of 85 flight hours per month and 80 hours of ground duty. For short haul pilots, most will either go home daily if possible or they'll work for 5 days and then spend 3 days or 4 days at home. Long haul pilots spend more time away from home but get around 10 to 15 off days per month to go home. Each certificate and rating requires that pilots pass a knowledge test on the ground and a practical flying exam, usually called a check ride, in an appropriate aircraft. In addition to earning these credentials, many pilots get a flight instructor certificate after they get their commercial pilot certificate.
As long as she has a 'fit to fly' certificate issued within 7 days of travel , most airlines have no issue. Can you lose flight hours?

Pilots at charter airlines — sometimes referred to as Holiday carriers — such as TUI often have significantly longer trips than scheduled carriers. Family members may fly free when space is available or at discounted rates. Flying stand-by is a common benefit, but it can be challenging when there is a group. Some airlines provide “buddy passes†to pilots to share with friends and families.
As a general rule, private pilots may neither act as PIC of an aircraft for compensation or hire nor act as PIC of an aircraft carrying persons or property for compensation or hire. Being an airline pilot, it is likely you will have access to discounted plane tickets for family and friends, which means good deals on great vacations. Most airlines will also offer excellent staff travel packages, with flag carriers typically offering 90% off their ticket prices for you and your family. This means you might be able to travel from London to New York in First or Business Class for as little as £150.

Some jobs have trips that fly for 1-2 weeks at a time, not necessarily everyday but they are gone from base that long. Also where one lives relative to the base they work at will affect how often they are home with family. Short haul pilots might either be on a fixed rostering pattern or a variable roster. A fixed roster means you work a set number of days on, then have a set number of days off.

Although most commercial pilots remain near their home overnight, some may still work nonstandard hours. That can change once you climb up the ranks and become a senior pilot. You’ll have some freedom to choose when you want to work, what days or weeks to take time off from work, and even which flights to take. It might be hard to balance work and family life at first, but it will definitely get better as time passes.
Days can be very short or very long, be very busy or even be a bit boring. An airline transport pilot can fly up to 8 hours per 24 hour period and up to 10 hours if a second pilot is aboard. Some variances to these regulations exist depending on the company's operations specifications. There are strict rules around how long pilots can fly without a break and how long they can fly in a 24-hour period. Pilots can fly anywhere from 8 to 14 hours a day, depending on a few factors, including start time and how many other pilots are on board. All in the contract, routes, and choices of the pilot within that contract.
For the senior guys, there is quite a bit of flexibility if you’d rather fly shorter trips or fly less often. That being said, the majority of our pilots are flying one 4 day trip per week. Airline Pilots have a minimum of 12 to 15 days off per month,depending on the airline. For example, in a 30-day month, Southwest Airlines mandates that pilots take 15 reserve days. In addition, FAA regulations allow pilots to fly just 1,000 hours a year. While almost any task or maneuver can be practiced in the simulator, the FAA does point out some items that you cannot count towards the 2.5 hours of credit for the private pilot certificate.
Some shorthaul legacy airlines — a name given to older, established airlines that were once flag carriers — operate tours or something known as W-patterns. If you’re a regional or shorthaul pilot, you can expect to be away from home anywhere from zero to two nights during the week. The job typically offers more days off than your typical Monday to Friday 9-5 job, and better holiday allowances. The downside to this is that you may find yourself seldom having a free weekend; little or no summer leave and bank holidays are just another normal working day. Whilst this may seem minor to some, having to miss Christmas or family a member’s birthday celebration year after year can take its toll.
